Google Trends and Promotion Schedules

Have you ever messed around with Google Trends? This is the search engine-ish tool that shows the volume of searches that people are doing based on the time of year. This photo shows that the best time for back to school is, gasp, August. That said, I was super surprised that the best time for "gifts for mom" was NOT Mother's Day but Christmas.

So what does this mean for your small business and how does it differ from the standard, "do 4th of July promotions in late June".

Well, you need to know your keywords and what you are trying to rank for. Let's take a look our friend Debbie Hall who is a Mary Kay lady. She sells makeup and skin care products. In this picture you can see that there were huge spikes for Mary Kay in 2005 and 2006 which were for the arrest and trial of Mary Kay Letourneau which we can disregard entirely. The neat thing that I like is that there has been a consistent upward trend for Mary Kay over the last few years.

Additionally we get some other good keywords we could use…Mary Kay online, Mary Kay products, and Mary Kay makeup. What we did not get are trends that we could capitalize on. That said, I do see that every December Mary Kay drops like a stone so I would NOT try to use that keyword then.

So what should she use? Let's think about summer and sunscreen, "Mary Kay Sunscreen" goes nuts every May and June and generally flatlines for the rest of the year. Debbie could write blog posts about, "Why you should make sure to reapply sunscreen every 4 hours", "How to keep your kids safe with sunscreen" and "What is the proper SPF for sunscreen". She could share that post on Facebook, Stumble Upon and Google Plus. She could post pictures of Mary Kay sunscreen on Pinterest or do a little video about the proper way to apply sunscreen on YouTube.

In each case she should NOT sell Mary Kay sunscreen in her posts but put a neat little ">> Looking for the best sunscreen? Check out our SPF 50" at the end of each one!

Now, I KNOW most people are not creative so let's do some fun other examples! If you want us to give you some ideas about good Google Trends leave a comment below and we will add it to the post!

Google Trends Cool Examples - When should you sell your stuff!
• Ad spending - October and November…corporations must be doing their marketing budgets
• Bird feeders - May and December…not sure if this a Christmas thing or if world wide usage means that overseas their summer is opposite
• Car sales - NOT October, November and December…so must be because of the holidays
• Dog grooming - Annual peaks in June and July…we all must be worried that Fido is going to be too hot with his winter coat on!
• Electronics - December…good for Christmas sales
• Fans - June and August…must be a "buy it now" purchase because people are not looking in advance of the heat
• Google keyword trends - Not enough search volume to show results..don't get discouraged, just pick another term!
• Home cleaning - another mystery one..July and April, what about spring cleaning?
• iPhone - October and September…must be when the new models come out
• Jewelry - December…but peaks other times…wondering if that is with the price of gold? If you were selling gold jewelry you should know that and choose other words to get buyers
• Karate classes - June and August…probably to keep the little darlings amused during the summer
• LG television - December shopping but interesting bumps in May too
• Mentoring - Another dud for December and also the summer months…just good to know so all you coaches and trainers can plan accordingly
• Nail polish - thought this one was a dud but there is a surge in July
• Oakley - Sunglasses that top in July…would have thought that would be sooner, always pays to check • Painting - October is the month for painting…seems weird but true
• Quikcrete - this is fast drying concrete and is probably used by people sprucing up their homes for the summer
• Self publish books - Not good months but SO interesting that it is increasing strongly
• Tax help - February and a little April BUT if you are doing all your promotions in March or April, you are missing the window to get those searches
• Umbrella - June and July…no April showers or May flowers here
• Vacations - January..with a vengance!
• Web marketing - Is in a downward trend BUT peaks every September and October
• Xbox - December of course, but also June…knowing these sub trends can mean MUCH less competition then!
• YAKIMA - Bike rack makers…not surprisingly they are big in the summer (July especially)
• Zumba - January hands down…would guess that this is the "lose weight" crowd from New Years resolutions

so there you have it…a couple of notes from this exercise.

NEVER assume you know when people are searching for your product or service. Take the time to check out the Google Trends site to make sure you KNOW when your best chances are. We didn't talk about this but they also will tell you what is trending now, which you can use to piggyback on. And lastly, try LOTS of keywords…some things you never thought would have a "season" do!

Building Your Online Business? Here Are 4 Disasters To Avoid

Building an online business is ideal for the person that can spare an hour or two each day and be based at home. This doesn’t mean you must be based at home because some people find it near impossible to work in a home environment. A man I know operates a number of online businesses and rented an office in town. He now has two staff members helping him and claims he would not have made it to first base had he remained working from home. Obviously he has found the secret and is doing well.

Let us start by examining the wrong ways to go about building an online business and article 2 will look at the right ways.

- Start by deciding on one system and one system only. The internet is loaded with offers that you must subscribe to today or lose out forever. - Don’t be fooled into grabbing it because you will create information overload and never get your business off the ground.

- You are going to need a website and may never have operated one before. Do not make the mistake of rushing into the first “Build Your Own Website in Minutes” program that you find. There are thousands out there and you should avoid being rushed into decisions too early.

- In the early stages of building online businesses do not sign up for everything because you will build up bills like crazy. At this stage it is best to keep it simple and spend the absolute minimum.

- The best piece of advice we can offer anybody setting out to build an extra income online is: “If it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.”

Now let’s look at some of the many ways you can make money online because we strongly advise you only start with one income stream but will build more over time and if you take just one step at a time you will master the system very quickly and efficiently.

- Google Adsense.

- Affiliate marketing.

- Selling products.

- eBay.

There are more but these are the tried and tested methods and it is best to stick with these until you have sufficient cash flow to investigate others. In all things in life there is a learning curve and your early days online are all about working hard until the learning curve is completed and then reaping the benefits.

We all have access to knowledge but few are able to convert that knowledge into power or profit; nobody built a business that was an instant success and people that claim they can show you how to make millions by following their methods are usually lying. Just stop and think about that claim: If you had a business system that made millions how keen would you be to share it with others for the once only price of $99.95 or even $19.95. If these offers come from free email addresses like yahoo, gmail or hotmail don’t even bother opening them because they are usually phoney.

On ayecasher com we will attempt to guide you to the many reputable people online that will help you build a successful income at little or no cost and will never send you to anything that we haven’t tested first and subscribe to. To be honest I have lost thousands of dollars over the years buying worthless things online and that is why this site will always be very particular before making recommendations.

In article 2 we will show you how to get started building an online business in a safe manner without laying out thousands of dollars and falling into the information overload trap.

How To Find Free Internet Marketing

New ecommerce businesses are caught up in SEO and web optimization. They view Google as the holy grail of making profits via the internet. Their internet marketing budget is sank into buying traffic, optimizing pages, and establishing major PayPerClick programs with the major search engines. All the work, and expense, involved in following the pack, is virtually unnecessary in today’s ecommerce world.

Marketing the Website

Submitting to search engines is only the first step toward a strong Internet Marketing campaign – it should never be the full focus. There are several ways to market a website.

- search engine optimization
- Pay Per Click
- Search Engine Submission
- Generating Inbound Links and increasing Page Rank
- Building Content
- Adding Social Networking Tools such as forums

Each one of these tools have a benefit. Recently a blog community went from PR0 – PR4, and receiving 300 000 hits a month with a budget of $50 a month. The blog community invested $20 a month in a PayPerClick program to ‘boost’ their exposure on Google and be accepted and ‘ranked’ faster.

www.communati.com submitted the website to more than 3000 search engines, free, using www.webceo.com. Despite the ‘old’ search engine hype, this should only be done once or twice a year. They embarked on an article writing, forum promoting, and encouraging members to ‘put the word out.’ The inbound link campaign increased their Page Rank to PR4 within 5 months, an incredible feat.

Next, communati added social networking features like points and a chat. The important ‘trick’ to remember is that search engines give more rank to pages inside the website, not the index or home page. Building links to the home page is becoming a waste of time. Five articles with specific topics that contain high keywords, links to the rest of the ecommerce website, and ‘hooks’, will generate more PR than links to a buy now page, the index page, or a page with heavy images and graphics.

Marketing the Blog

All websites should include a blog. Not because a blog is necessary, or because people read them. The number one reason for putting up a blog is to increase keyword density, but keep in below the 5% ‘red flag’ level. It also generates dozens of extra content pages, increases the number of ‘in house’ links which are also important to increasing page rank.

A blog can also be submitted to blog directories. The best way to submit is using a service. When an Internet Marketing manager submits a blog to a directory, they must include a backward link. When they use a service they can submit to about 1000 directories without back links. The price ranges from $200 - $500. http://www.lazyurl.com/ , http://www.submitcomfort.com/

One advantage of a blog is that it is submitted to the blog directories every time someone writes a new post. Web sites that are submitted more than 4 or 5 times a year may find themselves banned. However, a blog can ping the search engine several times a day without risk of being banned.

In turn, the blog search engines ‘ping’ the big search engines who give the ‘new’ content high page rank for the first few hours.

Marketing The Podcast

No podcast on your ecommerce website? Why? Submitting it to the podcast directories is another way to generate free exposure. The podcast only needs a few streaming or downloaded files to qualify. Podcasts can also be listed on dozens and dozens of free services, each building links to the main site, as well as increasing the exposure to the website. AmigoFish.com, Digg Podcasts , Podcast Pickle , www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts or http://podcasts.yahoo.com.

The most popular podcatcher software is iTunes, which is available as a free download from www.apple.com/itunes/download.

Promote Video

Does your product Appeal to younger people? Then load video at facebook, youtube, etc and then submit those videos. Don’t make a dry workshop or seminar style tutorial, but make it interesting. It is amazing how many younger people click in keywords, and then use the ‘search video only’ link to view relevant videos instead of reading articles.

The list continues. Submit your newsletter, forums, and chat directories. A single article can be submitted to more than 50 000 article submission ‘free content’ sites. No cost involved, except time, and the exposure will create a ripple effect sending your message farther across the web than a $100 000 SEO, traffic buying, and search engine submission campaign.

2 Things Your Ecommerce Website Must Have

Online shopping is the latest trend among customers. Why would you still go to the shop personally when you can do shopping from the comforts of your own home? Because of the rising popularity of online shopping, more and more business persons are setting up their own ecommerce websites to meet the needs of customers and of course, earn big money online.

There is a very bright future for ecommerce websites. As long as there are needs that should be met, there will be customers. For ecommerce website owners, earning money online can be so easy. If people need your products and services, your website will stay alive as long as you want.

Online Competition For Ecommerce Websites

Because of the increasing numbers of online shoppers, there is a need for more ecommerce websites. The problem, however, is that there seem to be several ecommerce websites now. A lot of business persons have answered the call to sell something online. This makes online competition very tough.

Just think about this, if you sell health and beauty products online, there are hundred more several websites like yours. They also offer the same products and services. If there is one customer looking for a health product, he has a hundred choices to choose from. So how can you increase your websites chance of getting that customer?

Plan Ahead And Market Your Ecommerce Website

This is one thing that most ecommerce website owners do not completely understand. Most of them think that once they have set up their websites, they dont have to do anything anymore. They will just sit and wait for sales. This may be true ages ago, but with the tough competition now, if you dont do anything, you wont get any sales.

Ecommerce websites need two things to consider. First is planning and the second is marketing. Before setting up the website, there must be a thorough planning first. In planning, you must consider the target market, budget, design and other factors that will affect the overall performance of the website.

Second is website marketing. After you have set up your website, you need to work on a marketing campaign. Through marketing, you can make your website more popular and visible to your target market. There are several web marketing options which you can use. The choice of the web marketing option depends on the need of your website.

Remember not to stop working on your website after the set up. If you stop working on it, the sales will also stop. Continually market your website for continuous sales.
